Project Integration
The basic intent of our program is to offer quality services to older adults with developmental disabilities in an integrated setting. Our philosophy recognizes the rights of these individuals to participate in the same activities as their non-disabled peers. However, we also realize that they may need additional assistance to address any special needs, as well as to encourage integration and participation in center activities.
We currently have 21 clients that attend the Richmond and Castro Senior Centers. We have two staff that provides direct services. Our clients are referred by Golden Gate Regional Center, which is state-mandated to provide case management services to the developmentally disabled. They are also our funding agency.
While at the center, the clients are offered a full day of integrated program activities which include art/crafts, exercise programs, health/nutrition classes, a hot noon meal and opportunities to socialize and establish relationships with their non-disabled peers. Client choice and interests determine her/his daily schedule, and new interests are encouraged by staff.
The primary role of staff is to provide training and support to the individuals in the program. The staff also acts as a liaison to GGRC, the client's home and/or family.
The program was initiated 16 years ago with a Program Development Fund Grant through the California Department of Developmental Services. In 1994 we were approved by GGRC to be vendors of services to their clients. We are pleased to be able to continue our mission. If you have further inquires about the program, please feel free to contact Karen James at (415) 221-2780.
Volunteer Profile
Thomas "Slim" Pendergast
In the early stages of building an integrative program, we met Thomas Pendergast. Know to all of us as "Slim," he reflects the best positive aspects of our program.
At over six feet tall, he maintains an imposing presence. A former Special Olympic star athlete and pocket billiards champion, it is hard to conceive of a more integral personality in our collective success.
Year after year, he has offered us his labor, art, and "whatever," evaluation of life's obstacles. Slim shows us all how to walk the heroic path.
